He glared around, relishing the shock he saw on the passengers' faces as he asserted his absolute authority from the outset. He caught sight of Aubrey Blue seated against the window and, after a moment of contemplation, winked.

Aubrey was tempted to wink back, and minutes later, in the shuffle of passengers boarding and luggage being strapped to the boot of the shiny new Concord coach, she even admitted to a little sadness. Jim Brody was her last link with the east. When he rumbled away, she knew there would be no turning back.
